Meet Matt Gay, our Senior Sales Support Lead at FSFP. Matt interacts with prospective clients in our business development and sales support areas.
Matt plays a key role in ensuring the sales process runs seamlessly, maximizing efficiency from start to finish. We appreciate Matt's contributions to FSFP and hope you enjoy learning about his role at our company.
If you had to describe your FSFP role to a third-grader, how would you explain it?
My role at FSFP is akin to being a soccer team's coach or helper behind the scenes. I ensure all the equipment works and schedule the team's practices (meetings), so they have everything they need to play well with other teams (clients). But I also bring my unique approach to the game. Occasionally, I send messages to other teams asking if they'd like to play (emailing potential new clients) or to see if they enjoy playing with us (follow-ups). While I do many things to help the team win, I ensure everything runs smoothly. If I help everything run smoothly from when we try to win a client until we close the sale, I’ve done my job well.
What do you enjoy most about working in the data management and governance industry?
My passion for data management and governance stems from my background in political science. I understand policies and how people contribute to them. What fascinates me is that data is not limited to a technological space. It's about people and the processes that companies develop to manage data. One of the most exciting things about data management for me is collaborating with people. At its core, data management is an industry that revolves around people, and that's what I enjoy about it!
What advice would you offer people interested in breaking into this field?
For those interested in breaking into this field, my advice is to stay resilient and maintain a learning and growing mindset. It takes time to learn the ins and outs, and we don't get taught all the capabilities in school. The best thing someone can do is find something that interests them and run with it. Then, keep going! Any complexities won't make sense the first year out. They won't make sense the second. It takes time. Keep learning. Put your ego aside and keep moving forward. If someone can learn the data management industry, they can learn anything.
FSFP lives by its FIRST values (focus, integrity, resourcefulness, skillfulness and teamwork). Thinking back over the last few weeks, which values have you or others demonstrated?
Teamwork is the key to success. Last year, FSFP attended Collibra's Data Citizens conference, which required a collaborative effort to organize everything beforehand. Thanks to everyone's efforts, I could easily set everything up once we arrived at the site. During the conference, I had to be resourceful in asking questions and communicating with the organizers to ensure everyone knew where they needed to be and when. Additionally, it was essential to remain focused and pay attention to the prospects we interacted with. Our expertise in data governance allowed us to comprehend a company's issues and initiate discussions to collaborate with them. We displayed almost all our FIRST values at that event, and overall, the success was a team effort.
Working from home, as we all do at FSFP, has its perks. What would you order if you could get a free lunch from DoorDash today?
My order would likely be a Philly cheese steak from Jake's Steaks. Conveniently, it’s just across the street, so I can skip DoorDash. However, I would definitely order a Philly cheese steak.
What's your favorite activity after hours when not working with FSFP clients?
I enjoy several things, but my favorite is hanging out with my friends and the community here in San Francisco. I also enjoy spending time with my family, hiking and being outdoors. I love reading, playing video games, watching movies and exercising. I like the “generic stuff,” but I’m thankful for the freedom to do what I enjoy.
We hope you enjoyed the latest installment in our Meet the Team series. Check out our other team member interviews to learn more about the people who make FSFP tick.
